Plan your patio layout before choosing the pattern
Place furniture and mark walking routes first. A patio that fits daily use is easier to evaluate than a finish chosen before the footprint, door connection and drainage are understood.
Test the footprint
Use a temporary, removable outline to picture the space. Allow room for chairs in use and routes around furniture. Keep the exercise approximate and confirm boundaries and setbacks through the appropriate sources.
Look beyond the center
Doors, steps, garden edges and downspouts affect the patio's usefulness. Discuss these connections with the installer before focusing on a pattern. If a covered structure or utilities are part of the idea, identify them as separate work needing confirmation.
Compare finish options last
Once the intended use is clear, compare texture, color and maintenance. Ask about wet conditions and where joints will appear. A finish should serve the layout rather than conceal a missing drainage or access plan.
